This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
