The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
