The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
