Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation about The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
