The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
